World Info: In the year 3025, humanity is at what many would call the peak of mankind's evolution. Technological advancements have minimized death rates and created effective solutions to such problems like world hunger and cancer. There haven't been any wars in nearly 200 years and there's talk of unifying the world under a single banner. We've even begun terraforming Mars with some modicum of success. With the aid of machines making daily life easier and easier, there is no better time to be alive. At least, if you're on the richer side of the dividing line.

On the other side, inflation and rising housing costs have made it harder for the working class to get by. So much so that many have turned to a life of crime as their only option for survival. When it began to get to the point that prisons were overflowing and unable to hold all the people the judges convicted, the government quickly sought a solution to keep these dangerous people off the streets.

Enter Senator Fullum, he proposed that they make use of the recently evacuated city Monocota, which had been quarantined by way of a massive wall erected around the city's borders. The reason for it's isolation was due to an incident at the city's primary science labs which released an air-born stimulant known as D49-GA (D49 for short.) D49, which was a drug that targeted the adrenal system in order to increase a person's efficiency and ability to work, was deadly in its prototype stage, liable to overwork a human being's mind and drive them mad. This phenomenon was called "overheating."

Though there was protests on grounds of inhumane cruelty, he added that only the worst criminals would be sent into this city and given the means with which to fight the disease. Bracelets which would routinely inject the criminals with a blocker would be locked around their wrists to protect them against the effects of D49, long enough until they could be relocated to another jail when space became available.

2 years after Fullum's proposal, a young girl was murdered in the middle of the street by a recently paroled ex-con. The reason for his release? No space in the jails. Fullum used this incident to push the bill forward and it was made law a mere 6 months after the incident.

Afterward, Monocota was renamed Monochrome in honor of the girl who had been killed and Senator Fullum, its primary funder, was given full control of the facility. However, as the years began to pass with no change in regards to jail space and the city filling up, a terrible discovery was made. Though the bracelets seemed to delay the effects of D49 with no ill effects, after x-amount of years the body adapted to the blocker making it ineffective and causing various inmates to overheat. These inmates then began to rampage all over the city, killing other inmates in gruesome, inhumane and gory ways. Though they were eventually put down by armed forces, it raised the dilemma of what to do. There still wasn't anywhere else to put these convicts and now it was horribly obvious that leaving them in this city was leaving them to die.

The solution, Fullum decided? Give them a chance to defend themselves. He armed the criminals with weapons and, in that kind of genius stroke that could only be considered brilliant by a greedy madman, decided to make a game of the whole thing to be broadcasted on TV for profits. By that time he had grown so politically powerful that he was practically untouchable so, unfortunately, there was no one to stop him.

He divided the criminals into two groups, Black and White, and gave them a promise.

Kill everyone on the other team, win your freedom. Though the game was later spiced up with the addition of Grays and Colors, the game remained simplistic in its genocidal base.

It's been 13 years since then...

History: Leona had a fairly average life for the first 16 years of it. She had parents who didn't "get" most of what she did but tried their best to understand and raise her as well as they could. Her brother yanked on her pigtails and punched a bully in the face when he made her cry and got sent to detention for it. She stole his CDs when she was young and brought him snacks when he was grounded without dinner. All in all, you average family who, though they had their arguments, was happy.

Trouble came when Leona was 14, though, by way of an on-off boyfriend she called Johnny. Though he was temperamental and often got into trouble for shoplifting, they were fairly consistent until it was normal at their school to hear they'd broken up or gotten together again. When she was 16, however, Johnny suddenly became incredibly arrogant. He was convinced he was going to make it big time and that Leona should be grateful he was her boyfriend. Two months later, she finally got fed up with his attitude and told him to take a hike. They had a fight, yelled at each other a bit before Johnny suddenly lost it and attacked her, something he'd never done before.

Her brother, Adrian, who happened to be coming home early from class that day, walked in the door to see Johnny with his hands around Leona's throat on the ground in the living room. Without pause he entered the scuffle and, when Johnny pulled a gun, Adrian panicked, grabbed a cardboard cutter on the living room table and slashed- just once.

It was over before either of them knew it with Johnny on the living room floor clutching his throat. When the authorities arrived, Johnny was pronounced dead on the scene and Leona and Adrian were charged with first-degree murder. Though there were rumors that the case had a bigger hand in it, manipulating the outcome, Leona and Adrian were sentenced to Monochrome for life, meaning their only chance to be free again would be to win the game.

Assigned a code name and a weapon, Leona was then placed into the city under her new identity, Theta, as a Gray. A neutral player who could join either the Black or White team. Adrian, however, was made a Color. Colors in the game were wild cards, generally given powerful weapons (usually firearms as opposed to the close combat weapons other players got) because of their condition. Anyone who killed a Color, no matter what their own team was, won their personal freedom, no questions asked.

Because of this, Adrian (now named Delta) was a constant target, sought by anyone in Monochrome who wanted out. Leona, who refused to kill Adrian for her own freedom despite him telling her to, promised that she would get them both out. Were it not for the aid of two veteran players, Zeta and Kappa who were both Grays, Leona and Adrian would have died right off the bat. Both players, who had been in the game for more than 7 years apiece, taught the two siblings how to fight, who to look out for and how to protect themselves utilizing the city's layout. They also got help from the only other Color in the city, Sigma, who told them that it was wise not to trust anyone, not even each other because of D49.

Eventually, however, as word got out that the second Color, Delta, was protected by another player, more and more people began to seek them out. Among these was Xi, a young man who was a Gray like Theta and a woman from the Whites named Phi, who was actually one of Delta's exs. Though both swore they'd kill Delta and win their freedom, there were people who were impressed by Theta's resolve and loyalty to her brother, so much so that they chose to help them out. Men like Gamma from the White and Omega from the Black.

Unfortunately, as the year rolled on, the fighting and chemicals began to claim their friends. First Sigma and Omega, who were killed for numbers, and then eventually Zeta and Kappa, both of which overheated, forcing Delta and Theta to kill them.

Though Theta nearly lost her resolve, Delta forced to her to go on, telling her that if she was prepared to give up then and there, then she could kill him and walk out. Theta, jolted by the pain at the thought of losing him, refused like she always had and promised him they would eventually get out. That she was going to tear this system down and get everyone the justice they deserved even if it took the rest of her life.

At the end of the second year, Theta, with the aid of Gamma, Phi, Epsilon, Psi and Xi, finally realized that the only way to end Monochrome and bring down Senator Fullum was to get the truth of the city out into the real world. To show the people what the cameras weren't: the suffering, the lies, the faked trials to get criminals who didn't deserve to be in the city as players... and in order to get that truth out there, one of them had to get out to do it.

Theta had to kill Delta, claim his bracelet and the reward for killing a Color. Eventually, Epsilon made an offer. He had been in the game for the longest, 20 years running without overheating, and that was because he believed the area he stayed in had something to do with it. He lived underground where he hypothesized D49 had less effect, maybe none at all. His suggestion, that Delta take Theta's bracelet and claim she had killed him while he and Delta remain underground, waiting for her to free them, was met with hesitation, because once someone overheated, there was no way to save them. If Theta took his bracelet, proof that he was either dead or going to die, Delta would be defenseless against D49.

In the end, the need to keep her promise to everyone, that they would someday get justice, outweighed her own desire to keep her brother safe and she took the chance, gaining freedom under the pretense that Delta was dead.

Canon point: After she "kills" her brother.

Personality:
As she is now, Leona is jaded, cautious and always mistrustful of everybody she meets. She prefers to watch and wait rather than act hastily, though once she's decided to make a move nobody can stop her. Intelligent, cunning and resourceful, she adapts quickly and never stays still for long, constantly making use of her seemingly endless energy. She never lets on when she's feeling down or tired, preferring to keep such emotions hidden behind closed doors or when she's alone with her brother. To everybody else, she'll always keep up the facade of determination and resolve, endlessly trudging on towards an impossible goal.

If she comes across as subdued, that is most likely the effects of her bracelet, keeping her sane from all the D49 running through her blood. Despite her quiet, non-excitable personality though, there's a fire in her eyes and a definite passion in how she acts. This is someone who was full of vigor once, and that energy is just waiting to come back, even if it might ultimately drive her insane.

To say she's not all that concerned about her own physical well-being is a lie. She just places the welfare of others (her brother in particular) ahead of her own. She chooses to care about other people in her own way, especially younger kids who shouldn't be exposed to these kinds of terrible situations, but she rarely lets that show in public. Her experience is that nobody wants pity and handing that out is like spitting in their faces when they've worked so hard to survive up until now. Her general reaction when faced with children in this kind of scenario is to tell them to man up and that if they need her, she'll be there. This holds true even for kids who are snotty little backstabbing dicks. Mostly because she has a soft spot for the younger generation.

Ultimately, Theta isn't someone you would really want around, despite her leadership qualities. She's angry, determined and quiet, forcing her to come across as sullen. She gets impatient with people who don't do something right and has a terrible bedside manner, generally acting in crude and abrasive ways. While she won't be openly rude for no good reason, her unsociable persona tends to come across in everything she does.
